Community cohesion at the local level : addressing the needs of Muslim communities : examples of local initiatives : FRA 2008 by European Union( Book )

6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report brings together experiences from a number of cities across Europe. It focuses on fields such as education, employment and the provision of public services which all remain critical for the success of building cohesive communities. This publication is aimed at policy makers and practitioners involved in addressing racism and discrimination or working in the field of equality, community cohesion and integration at the local level. In addition, it should be of value to those responsible for service delivery at the local level. The report cites examples of how mainstreaming non-discrimination can contribute to community cohesion and equality in a given community and shows that diversity and equality can reinforce each other within one community cohesion policy vision. Integration does not necessarily mean cohesion.--Publisher's description

EU-MIDIS, European Union minorities and discrimination survey by European Union( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Of all the groups surveyed by the FRA, the Roma emerged as the group most vulnerable to discrimination and crime. The FRA has therefore analyzed their situation in a 'data in focus' report, the first in a series of reports on minority groups and issues covered by the survey. The report on the Roma reveals a bleak picture for the estimated 12 million Roma in the EU. Roma reported the highest overall levels of discrimination across all areas surveyed. 66-92% of Roma (depending on the country) did not report their most recent experience of discrimination to any competent authority. 65-100% of the Roma respondents reported lack of confidence in law enforcement and justice structures.--Publisher's description
Violence against women : an EU-wide survey : results at a glance by European Union( Book )

17 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Violence against women undermines women's core fundamental rights such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. For example, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15; one in five women has experienced stalking; every second woman has been confronted with one or more forms of sexual harassment. What emerges is a picture of extensive abuse that affects many women's lives but is systematically underreported to the authorities. The scale of violence against women is therefore not reflected by official data. This FRA survey is the first of its kind on violence against women across the 28 Member States of the European Union (EU). It is based on interviews with 42,000 women across the EU, who were asked about their experiences of physical, sexual and psychological violence, including incidents of intimate partner violence ('domestic violence'). The survey also included questions on stalking, sexual harassment, and the role played by new technologies in women's experiences of abuse. In addition, it asked about their experiences of violence in childhood. Based on the detailed findings, FRA suggests courses of action in different areas that are touched by violence against women and go beyond the narrow confines of criminal law, ranging from employment and health to the medium of new technologies."--Editor

Choice and control : the right to independent living : experiences of persons with intellectual disabilities and persons with mental health problems in nine EU member states by European Union( Book )

10 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities establishes the right to live independently and be included in the community. Drawing on the findings of interview-based research with persons with mental health problems and persons with intellectual disabilities, this report examines how they experience the principles of autonomy, inclusion and participation in their day-to-day lives. The results show that although much has been done, more efforts are needed to ensure that persons with mental health problems and persons with intellectual disabilities have more choice and control over their lives and are included in the community on an equal basis with others. Most efforts to date have focused on deinstitutionalisation, but to achieve true independent living they should be accompanied by a range of social policy reforms in the areas of education, health care, employment, culture and support services. Key initiatives in policy, law and practice, identified in this report, can facilitate progress towards realising the right to independent living of persons with disabilities throughout the European Union
Handbook on European data protection law by European Union( Book )

13 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This handbook on European data protection law is jointly prepared by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the Council of Europe together with the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights. It is the third in a series of legal handbooks jointly prepared by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights and the Council of Europe. The aim of this handbook is to raise awareness and improve knowledge of data protection rules in European Union and Council of Europe member states by serving as the main point of reference to which readers can turn. It is designed for non-specialist legal professionals, judges, national data protection authorities and other persons working in the field of data protection. With the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon in December 2009, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union became legally binding, and with this the right to the protection of personal data was elevated to the status of a separate fundamental right. A better understanding of Council of Europe Convention 108 and EU instruments, which paved the way for data protection in Europe, as well as of the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union and of the European Court of Human Rights, is crucial for the protection of this fundamental right" Résumé éditorial

Fundamental rights at Europe's southern sea borders by European Union( Book )

10 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Each year, hundreds of men, women and children board overcrowded and ill-equipped boats in an attempt to reach Europe, a phenomenon that started in the late 1980s after European countries tightened immigration policies and made it more difficult to enter such countries in a regular way. This FRA report examines the conditions at Europe's southern sea borders with respect to the most fundamental rights of a person, the right to life and the right not to be sent back to torture, persecution or inhuman treatment. It looks at sea border surveillance and disembarkation procedures, as well as general issues such as EU policy, training and Frontex-coordinated operations, and examines practices across the EU Member States researched -- Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta and Spain. By mapping the fundamental rights challenges at Europe's southern sea borders and by identifying promising practices, this report is intended to offer advice to EU policy makers as well as practitioners at both the EU and Member State level -- EU Bookshop

Discrimination and hate crime against Jews in EU Member States : experiences and perceptions of antisemitism by European Union( Book )

12 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Antisemitism casts a long shadow on Jewish people's chances to enjoy their legally guaranteed rights to human dignity, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and non-discrimination. The daily insults, discrimination, harassment and even physical violence, with which Jewish people across the EU must contend, show few signs of abating, despite EU and EU Member States' best efforts. Nevertheless, little information exists on the extent and nature of antisemitic crimes to guide policy makers seeking to effectively fight these crimes. This FRA survey is the first-ever to collect comparable data on Jewish people's experiences and perceptions of antisemitism, hate-motivated crime and discrimination across a number of EU Member States, specifically in Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Its findings reveal a worrying level of discrimination, particularly in employment and education, a widespread fear of victimisation and heightening concern about antisemitism online. By shining light on crimes that all too often remain unreported and therefore invisible, this FRA report seeks to help put an end to them
