A physician and a surgeon attending to a woman patient. Oil painting by Matthijs Naiveu by Matthijs Naiveu( Visual )

1 edition published in 1700 and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A woman patient, deathly pale, sits on a chair, left. Behind her, a physician, bewigged, leans over her to take the pulse of her left hand with his left hand. Her left foot is placed in a tub of water and a young surgeon, kneeling on the right, lets blood from her left foot while holding a tourniquet around her ankle. There are conspicuous signs of wealth: the woman sits on a Goanese chair, an oriental carpet covers the floor, and silken drapes hang over her bed

Bloodletting from the foot is described by Jean-Baptiste Silva, Traité de l'usage des différentes sortes de saignée, principalement de celle du pied, Paris 1727, and by Philippe Hecquet (1661-1737) in his book Observations sur la saignée du pied, Paris 1748

Possibly identical with one of two paintings of surgical operations sold at auction in Amsterdam on 16 February 1802, as property of Z. [unidentified]. The second of the two (lot 88) is the more similar to the present picture, and is described in the catalogue as follows: "J. Naipveu. In een dito [Chirurgijns Winkel] Vertrek word een Boer door den Heelmeester aan den arm met een Lancet gesondeert , ter zyde een zittende Vrouw, en een staande Juffvrouw: door een openstaande deur ziet men in de winkel; in alles als de vorige, uitvoerig behandeld, door denzelven." The preceding lot, no. 87, is described as follows: "J. Naipveu. Verbeeld een Chirurgyns Winkel, waar in een Patient aan zyn arm verbonden word, ter zyde zit een schryende [or schryvende?] Vrouw, waar by een Juffrouw een kind; gestoffeert, met een ménigte bywerk, kragtig en uitvoerig gepenceeld" (Schley, loc. cit.)

A physician at the bedside of a young woman. Oil painting by Matthijs Naiveu by Matthijs Naiveu( Visual )

1 edition published in 1700 and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

On the left a pale young woman lies in bed. Centre, a physician in formal black costume takes the pulse of her left wrist with his right hand, and with his left hand holds up a flask of her urine for examination. On the right stand the patient's agitated parents. The room is richly furnished. On the left is a table covered with a Persian carpet; on it stands a wicker basket for the urine flask. Right background, floor-to-ceiling tapestries showing sylvan scenes. Top, a painted ceiling in which Cupid is depicted, with his arrow pointing down to the patient, perhaps representing love-sickness, sexual frustration or pregnancy
