The resort, called Hamada, is not easy to find but she is able to do so and checks in. It is the off-season in early spring and although the resort is open, the woman is the only guest. The place is run by a cheery, no-nonsense man who is also the cook. Other characters include an older enigmatic woman that comes to help and a young teacher at the local school. At first, the woman is not enthusiastic about the resort and the eccentric people she meets, but eventually she is drawn into the unhurried atmosphere that permeates the island and Hamada and come to appreciate the atmosphere of this idyllic resort
