Mental retardation: readings and resources by Jerome H Rothstein( Book )

27 editions published between 1961 and 1971 in English and held by 805 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Fifty-two readings on mental retardation, most of which were published between 1965 and 1970, are grouped by topic: general considerations, assessment and diagnosis, learning theory, early childhood education, school programs for the educable and the trainable, secondary school programs, community day care programs, programs for adults, institutional care, communicative skills, parent counseling, state and local program organization and administration, research, and future prospects. Readings and references are balanced to be of interest to educators, psychologists, rehabilitation counselors, medical personnel, and social scientists and to provide sources of information for parents and parent groups. Vocabulary and contents are geared to upper-division and graduate levels of instruction, and readings are correlated with a number of basic texts. Brief section introductions provide historical background and discuss related problems and articles. Supplementary resource tables and charts complement and amplify many readings. Resource materials contained in appendixes include lists of organizations, surveys of literature, journals, textbooks, books for parents and about retarded individuals, specialized bibliographies, federal agency publications, films, and film sources. Pattern recognition by retina-like devices by Carl F. R Weiman( Book )

4 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study has investigated some pattern recognition capabilities of devices consisting of arrays of cooperating elements acting in parallel. The problem of recognizing straight lines in general position on the quadratic lattice has been completely solved by applying parallel acting algorithms to a special code for lines on the lattice. The relation of the code to Farey series and continued fractions and the effects on the code of a line when the line is subjected to affine transformations were studied in detail. Algorithms for reducing straight line codes to a standard form were developed and made the basis of a line recognition process. Cellular automata were designed to carry out line recognition. Other cellular automata were designed to recognize topological connectedness, detect boundaries and approximate curves by straight line segments. (Author)

Parallel Processable Cryptographic Methods with Unbounded Practical Security by Jerome H Rothstein( Book )

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Addressing the problem of protecting confidential information and data stored in computer databases from access by unauthorized parties, this paper details coding schemes which present such astronomical work factors to potential code breakers that security breaches are hopeless in any practical sense. Two procedures which can be used to encode for reliability and noise immunity are described: groupoid and quasigroupoid string coding systems, and bus automata used as parallel coders and decoders. References related to cryptographic security are listed. (Fm)
Special Education PROJECT DESIGN. Educational Needs, Fresno, 1968, Number 19 by Joseph S Lerner( Book )

2 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Educational needs in the special education program of the Fresno City Unified School District are evaluated as part of PROJECT DESIGN, funded under ESEA Title III. In the study, data collected in the school district were compared with national trends. The major conclusion is that the overall program compares favorably with national norms. More specifically, programs for the deaf and blind were rated excellent. However, programs for the partially sighted, hard of hearing, speech impaired, crippled, and educationally handicapped fell below the enrollment trends nationally. It is suggested that more thorough screening methods in these areas would raise enrollments closer to the national rates. Classroom quality is adequate in most cases, with the exception that classes for the educationally handicapped are on double session. An additional suggestion is that the staff become more involved in budget preparation and admission procedures. (LN)

Entropy and the evolution of complexity and individuality by Jerome H Rothstein( Book )

2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Phase changes, chemical reactions and polymerization provide rich configurational structures, while quantum stationary states provide basic stablity. The Pauli principle, excluded volume, and vanishing transition probabilities for proper symmetry conditions yield possibilities for metastable energy storage, while catalysts can unlock the stored energy. Thermodynamic evolution is then able to push toward the formation of complex macromolecular heat engines. Individuality co-evolves with complexity in the sense that the number of stable or metastable isomers with essentially the same energy increases so rapidly as a function of the number of sub-units that eventually procedures capable of producing isomer mixtures, with roughly comparable probabilities of forming each one, will almost never produce two identical isomers
