The research and development of a low-light-level/near infrared TV camera tube with solid state array emphasized theoretical studies on graded heterojunctions and fabrication of Ge homojunction diode arrays. Graded heterojunctions were investigated with respect to possible improvement of dark current and quantum conversion efficiency beyond values reported for abrupt junctions. Work was done on the design of a high density Ge homojunction diode array target and on development of required processing technologies. Experimental test diodes and mosaics were fabricated for evaluation. Initial measurements on diodes in early stages of development indicate further work will be required to improve dark currents and to extend the spectral response towards shorter wavelengths. Passivating layers have not yet been applied to diodes or targets. To meet resolution objectives, a Ge etch is being developed for the thinning of targets. Methods for cryogenically cooling the tube are being considered. (Author)
