The collection contains Seth Barnes Nicholson's astronomical research and correspondence. The majority of Nicholson's research material deals with his study of Jupiter and its moons (Box 1). His other research (Box 2) includes his study of magnetic activity, the asteroid Icarus, Trojan asteroids, Pluto, Venus, the Sun and Sun spots (there is one item dealing with both Jupiter and the Sun in Box 1). There are some pieces of correspondence in the research folders. Most of the correspondence (Box 3) is between Nicholson and other astronomers throughout the world; the majority of it is also about Jupiter and its moons, asteroids and sun spots. Notable participants in the collection include: Giorgio Abetti, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Robert Grant Aitken, Joseph Ashbrook, Ira Sprague Bowen, Leland E. The four boxes that make up the "supplement" are made up of correspondence (arranged alphabetically by author) and manuscripts (arranged by topic). The sub-series includes the same authors that can be found in the larger Adams Collection boxes. The manuscripts (which include reports, speeches, articles, press releases, etc.) are written by several different people including Walter Adams, George Ellery Hale, Albert Michelson, F. E. Wright and many others. The majority of the manuscripts are related to astronomy and Mt. Wilson. There is one manuscript about Albert Einstein's visit to Mt. Wilson. There is also one folder of photographs and one folder of ephemera

The Mount Wilson Observatory Legal Papers comprise one box of material relating to the founding, construction, and operation of the institution dating from 1903 to 1939. The bulk of the papers are legal documents: deeds, leases, utility contracts, and permits. Two folders contain documents relating to legal actions taken against Mount Wilson and the Carnegie Institution. Also included are three letters from John D. Hooker, a Los Angeles industrialist, philanthropist, and founder of the California Academy of Science, announcing his donation to fund the 100" telescope that would bear his name. Other participants include: George Ellergy Hale, Walter S. Adams and Francis G. Pease. The papers are arranged alphabetically according to the person, company, or institution that created them
