Le roi ne songe qu'à se remarier et laisse à son oncle, Charles de Valois, le soin de diriger le royaume à sa place. Le Hutin se heurte à Marguerite qui s'oppose à l'annulation du mariage. Charles de Valois propose sa nièce, Clémence de Hongrie, pour seconde épouse à Louis. Avec l'aide de Robert d'Artois et l'accord tacite du roi, il fait étrangler Marguerite dans son cachot
