From metamathematics to philosophy : a critical assessment of Putnam's model-theoretic argument by Johannes Hafner( )

4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the paradigm examples of drawing philosophical consequences from formal theorems is Hilary Putnam's model-theoretic argument against metaphysical realism. The dissertation focuses mainly on the version of the argument which is directed against realism in set theory and which was presented by Putnam in his paper "Models and Reality" (1980). It serves us as a test case for studying how (if at all) metamathematics can enter--in a coherent and fruitful way--into philosophical discourse
