As long as it's pink : the sexual politics of taste by Penny Sparke( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in Japanese and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As Long as It's Pink argues that 'taste' has been a quality assigned to women while 'design' is a man-made construction which has taken aesthetic authority away from women. This in turn has succeeded in trivializing and marginalizing women's material culture. Ranging across histories of domesticity, feminine consumption and home-making, as well as modern design and broader cultural theories, Penny Sparke offers a completely new version of the history of our modern material culture

The Diary of Charles Holme's 1889 Visit to Kyoto, the West Coast of North America and Mrs. Lazenby Liberty's Pictorial Record of Japan( )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Charles Holme's detailed record of his travels through Japan, including the homeward journey via the west coast of the US and Canada, is published here for the first time, together with all fifty plates from the original limited edition of his companion Emma Liberty's "Japan, A Pictorial Record", with commentaries. Both diary and photographs provide scholars and researchers with a rare archive. A key figure in Europe's art world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and founder of "The Studio" art magazine, Charles Holme was a significant disseminator of Japanese art and art goods in the West and was a founding member of the Japan Society in London. Famously, he visited Japan in 1889 in the company of the painter Alfred East and Arthur Lasenby Liberty and his wife Emma, who was the 'official' photographer of the trip (taking more than a thousand photographs). Holme's sensitive and detailed account of his visit to Japan, including a selection of his thumbnail illustrations, offers valuable new insights into the many places he visited as well as aspects of everyday life in early Meiji Japan
