This dissertation develops a uni ed framework to study the (asymptotic) properties of all (periodic) spline based estimators, that is of regression, penalized and smoothing splines. The explicit form of the periodic DemmlerReinsch basis of general degree in terms of exponential splines allows to derive the exact expression for the equivalent kernel of all spline estimators simultaneously. The corresponding bandwidth, which drives the asymptotic behavior of spline estimators, is shown to be a function of both the number of knots and the smoothing parameter. Let K be a fixed number field, let p be a prime number, and let Z_p denote the additive group of padic integers. The growth of the pSylow subgroups of the ideal class groups of the intermediate fields in a Z_pextension L of K may be explicitly described in terms of the socalled Iwasawa invariants of L/K. In this thesis, we define a certain topology on the set of Z_pextensions of the number field K, and we prove that Iwasawa's invariants are locally maximal with respect to this topology. Furthermore, we develop necessary and sufficient criteria for the invariants to be globally bounded

Finger growth is studied in the first part of the thesis and a method for growth prediction is presented. The effectiveness of the method is validated in several tests. Fingerprint image preprocessing is discussed in the second part and novel methods for orientation field estimation, ridge frequency estimation and image enhancement are proposed: the line sensor method for orientation estimation provides more robustness to noise than state of the art methods. Curved regions are proposed for improving the ridge frequency estimation and curved Gabor filters for image enhancement. The notion of multilevel judgment aggregation is introduced as a design principle for combining different methods at all levels of fingerprint image processing. Lastly, score revaluation is proposed for incorporating information obtained during preprocessing into the score, and thus amending the quality of the similarity measure at the final stage. A sample application combines all proposed methods of the second part and demonstrates the validity of the approach by achieving massive verification performance improvements in comparison to state of the art software on all available databases of the fingerprint verification competitions (FVC)

The principles of the HardyLittlewood circle method are outlined and applied to Goldbach's ternary conjecture. New results due to H. Maier and the author on Vinogradov's theorem are proved under the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis. The final chapter discusses an approach to Goldbach's conjecture through theorems by L. G. Schnirelmann. This book concludes with an Appendix featuring a sketch of H. Helfgott's proof of Goldbach's ternary conjecture.
