Ludwig Schigl ist schon ein gewitzter Bursche - ständig lässt er sich etwas einfallen, um der Frau seines verstorbenen Tischlermeisters, der Witwe Schimek, unter die Arme zu greifen. In dem wohlhabenden Möbelhändler Kaltenbach findet er ein passendes "Opfer"; er soll der neue Vater der Jungen werden. Wie der Zufall es will, hat sich Kaltenbachs Kompagnon Weigel in Hedwig verliebt, und so scheint die Lösung aller Probleme in greifbarer Nähe. Nur führt Schigls gut gemeinter Übergreifer zu einer Reihe turbulenter Verwicklungen, die seine Pläne um ein Haar zum Scheitern bringen. Und dann ist da auch noch der eifersüchtige Tischlergeselle Franz, der nicht nur die Schimek'sche Schreinerei aufrecht erhält, sondern auch ei n Auge auf Hedwig geworfen hat

Wilhelm Voigt has a lengthy criminal record. In prison he trains to be a shoemaker and reads books about the army, especially books on uniforms. Released without documents or work, he picks up a captain's uniform from a junk dealer, and together with a few infantrymen, occupies the town hall in the small town of Köpenick. On discovering that the town hall does not issue documents, he confiscates the municipal funds and disappears. This escapade, set in the Berlin suburb of Köpenick, is a true story from 1906. Carl Zuckmayer wrote a play about it, and Helmut Käutner filmed it with the actor Heinz Rühmann. It was one of the most internationally successful entertainment films of the 1950s
