Part-time work of a domestic slave Gelegenheitsarbeit einer Sklavin ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2008 in German and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Rosewitha Bronski is a woman trying to make her way in a hostile society. She is a wife and mother, a local abortionist, and a factory worker turned union activist. Rosewitha's life is chaotic: her children scream for attention; her demanding husband is unemployed; the factory is in the midst of relocating; and doctors don't pay their referral fees. Her story is told in a cool, episodic style that makes use of voiceover and inserts to comment on her choices
Gelegenheitsarbeit einer Sklavin ( Visual )
2 editions published between 1973 and 2007 in German and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Although closer to comedy than tragedy, this is a companion piece to 'Yesterday Girl' in its concern with a young woman's efforts to make her way in a more or less hostile Federal Republic. Although fragmented by Kluge's use of a range of distancing devices the narrative is relatively conventional for Kluge. His sister, Alexandra, plays a Frankfurt housewife who runs an illegal abortion practice so that she can keep herself, her family, including her selfish husband, and paradoxically have more children. When the police close her abortion practice she decides to become politically active. Kluge saw the film primarily as a critique of the family, more specifically of the woman's role in a society based on the hermetic family unit
