Ein kleines jüdisches "schtetl", irgendwo im Osten Europas, 1941. Schlomo, der Dorfnarr, überbringt schlimme Nachrichten: Die deutschen Truppen rücken vor, jüdische Dörfer werden eliminiert, ihre Bewohner getötet oder verschleppt. Nach am selben Abend ruft der Rabbi den Rat der Weisen ein, und ausgerechnet Schlomo hat die rettende Idee! Um der drohenden Deportation durch die Nazi-Truppen zuvorzukommen, beschließen die Dorfbewohner, sich selbst zu deportieren und so vor den Deutschen über Russland bis nach Palästina zu fliehen. Stück für Stück wird ein maroder Güterzug zusammengekauft, Vorräte werden angelegt, einigen der Dorfbewohner wird eine Nazi-Uniform geschneidert und akzentfreies Deutsch beigebracht. Eines Nachts beginnt der "Zug des Lebens" mit allen Dorfbewohnern seine Irrfahrt in das gelobte Land - Eretz Israel. Unter der allgegenwärtigen Angst, von den echten Deutschen entdeckt zu werden, beginnen die Fliehenden sich zunehmend in ihren Rollenspielen zu verlieren: Die falschen Uniformträger nehmen sich plötzlich sehr wichtig, in der neu gegründeten kommunistischen Gruppe an Bord regt sich heftiger Widerstand gegen diese "bourgeoisen Faschisten". So rollt der Zug weiter, verfolgt nicht nur von den Deutschen, sondern auch von Partisanen, die ihn sprengen wollen. Mit Mut und Witz meistern die Zug-Insassen die heikelsten Situationen, bis sie sich schließlich der Frontlinie nähern.
