Electrophilic fluorination of aryl alkenes using 1-chloromethyl-4-fluoro-1,4-diazabicyclo(2.2.2) octane bis(tetrafluoroborate) - a selectfluor[TM] reagent by Chris Hardwick ( Book )
1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The focus of the study presented here is the electrophilic fluorination of phenyl substituted alkenes using F-TEDA in the presence and absence of nucleophiles. The molecules selected for this study were 1-methylcyclohexene, styrene, trans-stilbene, 1-phenylcyclohexene, and 1,1-diphenylethylene. These compounds were selected as targets of fluorination because their carbocation intermediates have different stabilities and an understanding of their reactivities increases our understanding of the boundaries and applicability of F-TEDA fluorinations. F-TEDA reactions proceed according to Markovnikov's rule suggesting a carbocation intermediate. No previous work has been reported with F-TEDA and 1-methylcyclohexene or 1-phenylcyclohexene but some work with F-TEDA has been reported using 1,1-diphenylethylene, styrene, and trans-stilbene. The reactivity and reaction pathways were studied as different nucleophiles were employed. It was found that when using target molecules that form moderately stabilized carbocation intermediates in the presence of F-TEDA and a good external nucleophile such as water, addition across the double bond produced fluorohydrins (in the case of water) in moderate to high yield. When only traces of water were present, the use of acetonitrile as a solvent favored production of fluoroamides. In the complete absence of water, vinyl fluorides were produced. These trends were seen using trans-stilbene, styrene, and 1-phenylcyclohexene. 1,1-diphenylethylene and 1-methylcyclohexene did not follow these trends. The fluoroamide could not be formed using 1,1-diphenylethylene. 1-methylcyclohexene favored addition of the acetonitrile to form the fluoroamide, even in the presence of water
