On October 1, 2006, the University of Mississippi dedicated the Civil Rights Monument, featuring a bronze statue of James Meredith who, in October 1962, became the first black student admitted to the University. Speakers and attendees included: Rev. Leroy Wadlington, Chancellor Robert Khayat, Representatives John Lewis and Roger Wicker, Governor William Winter, Mayor Richard Howorth, actor Morgan Freeman, James Meredith, and his son, Joseph Meredith, among others. Music was provided by the University of Mississippi Gospel Choir, Concert Singers, and Combined Choirs
