Democracy by Anthony Arblaster( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in Spanish and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The revised and updated edition of this survey takes account of the very different global context in which any discussion of democracy must now take place, including the mighty power of the multinationals vis-a-vis elected governments, the resurgence of the idea of an Islamic alternative to the Western democratic ideal, and the suggestion that unelected but powerful international bodies are effectively eroding the authority of the democratic state. Anthony Arblaster looks first at the history of both the theory and practice of democracy, and the fierce opposition it has often provoked, showing how the representative version of democracy we are now familiar with was a relatively late arrival on the scene. He finds the core of the idea of democracy in the notion of popular power, and in the second part of the book he explores the meaning of this and the problems it involves. Drawing on the classic writings of Rousseau, Paine and John Stuart Mill, he shows how wide the gap is between their vision of a fully democratic society and the limited realities of the Western democracies of today. Democracy, he argues, remains a relevant ideal and a challenge to much conventional political thinking, as well as to the centralizing tendencies of global power."--Jacket

End of millennium by Manuel Castells( Book )

2 editions published between 2001 and 2006 in Spanish and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Manuel Castells concludes the Information Age trilogy by considering the intersection of the global network society and factional project identities. As always, the scope of Castell's argument is far-ranging. Among the subjects addressed are the collapse of the Soviet Union; the potential emergence of the Asian Pacific as the next region of major world power; and the rapidly increasing growth of a "Fourth World"--A series of "black holes of informational capitalism" (areas that have been cut off from the flow of wealth and information in the global economy) that refuses to confine itself to national borders--as likely to appear in the American inner city as it is in sub-Saharan Africa. He also raises the specter of a "global criminal economy," a dark counterpart to transnational corporations, and suggests that trends such as fascination with gangster movies "may well indicate the cultural breakdown of traditional moral order, and the implicit recognition of a new society, made up of communal identity and unruly competition." End of Millennium is perhaps the most accessible of Castell's three volumes, expertly reading the pulse of late-20th-century social trends. It's bound to provoke debate about any efforts to shape the trends of the 21st century."-- from http://www.amazon.com (April 12, 2011)
The rise of the network society by Manuel Castells( Book )

4 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in Spanish and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an account of the economic and social dynamics of the new age of information. Based on research in the USA, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, it aims to formulate a systematic theory of the information society which takes account of the fundamental effects of information technology on the contemporary world. The author describes the accelerating pace of innovation and application. He examines the processes of globalization that have marginalized and now threaten to make redundant whole countries and peoples excluded from informational networks. He investigates the culture, institutions and organizations of the network enterprise and the concomitant transformation of work and employment. He shows that in the advance economies production is now concentrated on an educated section of the population aged between 25 and 40: many economies can do without a third or more of their people. He suggests that the effect of this accelerating trend may not be mass unemployment but the extreme flexibilization of work and individualization of labor, and, in consequence, a highly segmented social structure. The author concludes by a examining the effects and implications of technological change on media culture ("the culture of real virtuality"), on urban life, global politics and the nature of time. Redrawing the map of Europe by Michael Emerson( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in Spanish and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Michael Emerson has rare qualifications to advance ideas for the future of Europe in the early 21st century, having been economist, diplomat and academic in Paris, Brussels, Moscow and London. He does so in bold, fundamental terms. His is the whole Europe, from the Atlantic to Urals. The first part of the book dissects Europe's contradictory capacity for both enlightened integration and savage conflict. The second part confronts the strategies issues for Europe's future, treating questions of economics, security and institutions as a seamless web. Michael Emerson's main argument is twofold: (a) The European Union, having largely solved the 'German problem', still needs to make a success of the Euro and its security policies; and (b) a stronger structure for the wider Europe is needed to solve the 'Russian problem', and on this Emerson makes original proposals."--Jacket
