"An adaptation of Yoshinaga Fumi's unique comic of the same title that won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Set in the middle of the Edo period, but in a parallel world where one female Shogun is served by 3,000 handsome men, this film portrays the complex love-hate relationship between men and women in the Shogun's inner palace, amidst a backdrop filled with beautiful garments and magnificent artwork. A strange disease that only affects men has spread throughout the land. All important posts are taken over by women, while men, who are the minority, survive by selling their bodies to women who want to bear children. Mizuno Yunoshin (Ninomiya Kazunari) is the son of one of the shogun's retainers and follows the way of the warrior, despite social conditions. He enters the inner palace to save his family from poverty."--J-Pitch JFDB

"Set at the end of the Edo period, it follows a samurai's final three years before he must keep his promise to commit harakiri, the punishment for a crime he committed seven years before the tale begins. The 10-year delay is so Shukoku Toda (Yakusho) can complete a genealogical chronicle detailing the domain's history. Into his life as a simple country squire comes Shozaburo Danno (Junichi Okada), who has been sent by the prime minister to keep watch over the samurai. Toda's love for his family and commitment to the community, especially the area's downtrodden peasants, is unusual and Danno soon comes to suspect that this honorable man could not possibly have murdered someone in a fit of jealous rage. He sets out to investigate the truth, but finds something even more incriminating: a document that could unravel the domain's entire chain of command."--www.fccj.or.jp, October 9, 2017

In Tokyo, sociology student Akiko (Rin Takanashi) moonlights as a high-end prostitute. Her jealous boyfriend, Noriaki (Ryō Kase) is suspicious, but does not know about her work as a prostitute. One night, she is assigned to Takashi (Tadashi Okuno), an elderly former university professor who is more interested in making her dinner than having sex. The morning after their unconsummated night, Takashi drives Akiko to school for her exams. While waiting in the car for her, he encounters Noriaki, who assumes Takashi is her grandfather and asks permission to marry her. Takashi does not correct Noriaki's assumption and assures him he isn't ready for marriage. Akiko returns from her test to find Takashi and Noriaki still talking in the car. The three of them ride together toward a bookstore and while en route Noriaki, who owns a garage, diagnoses a problem with the car. He convinces Takashi to drive it to his garage where he replaces a fan belt-all the while not realizing that Takashi was Akiko's client. At the garage, they encounter a former student of Takashi's and Akiko worries he will reveal the truth to Noriaki. Takashi drops Akiko at the bookstore and returns home. Soon afterward, he receives a panicked phone call from Akiko and returns to the bookstore to pick her up. Her mouth is bloodied, apparently from an attack by Noriaki, although she does not provide any details. Takashi and Akiko are not home for long when Noriaki arrives, threatening them over the apartment intercom and banging on the door. She cowers on the couch. Takashi peers out his window to see what Noriaki is doing. In the film's final shot, a stone or brick comes through the window and Takashi falls to the floor, although it's unclear whether he has been struck
