Letters to the midwife by Jennifer Worth( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When the CALL THE MIDWIFE books became bestsellers, Jennifer Worth was inundated with correspondence. People felt moved to write to her because the books had touched them, and because they wanted to share memories of the world her books described, the East End of London in the late 1940s and early 1950s. LETTERS TO THE MIDWIFE is a collection of the correspondence she received offering a fascinating glimpse into a long-lost world. Along with readers' responses and personal histories, it is filled with heartwarming gems such as letters and drawings sent by one of the nuns featured in Call the Midwife and a curious list of the things Jennifer would need to become a missionary. There are stories from other midwives, lorry drivers, even a seamstress, all with tales to tell. Containing previously unpublished material describing her time spent in Paris, and some journal entries, this is also a portrait of Jennifer herself, complete with a moving introduction by her family about the Jennifer Worth they knew and loved

Miranda returns for a new series of the farcical, affectionate, and multi-award-winning BBC comedy, which follows one woman's hapless quest to fit in and attempt to lead a 'normal' life. Screened locally on ABC, legions of fans have already taken this lovable character to their hearts. In Series 2, Miranda is struggling to get over her love interest Gary who has gone to Hong Kong. With the decision to stop wallowing in self pity, Miranda goes about reinventing herself, hell bent on becoming the kind of woman who power walks to work, keeps her pot plants alive and eats all the fruit in the bowl before it rots. Miranda's eccentric mother Penny (Patricia Hodge: Rumpole of the Bailey) continues her embarrassing and futile attempts to marry her off to any man who walks by. Meanwhile her best friend Stevie (Sarah Hadland: Moving Wallpaper) and her old rival Tilly (Sally Phillips: Smack the Pony) stand back and unhelpfully point out where Miranda is going wrong. With the show taking out three British Comedy Awards for Best New TV Comedy Show, Best Female Comedy Actress and the People's Choice Award, Miranda is a character who will win you over with her warmth, humour and total clumsiness. Such fun!

Series 3 is set in 1959, and shows Jenny facing some tough personal and professional challenges. There are changes too for Chummy, as she settles into motherhood and for Sister Bernadette - now known as Shelagh as she prepares to marry Dr Turner. At Christmas, when an unexploded World War II bomb is discovered under a warehouse close to Nonnatus House, the nuns and dozens of local families find themselves homeless. Later, Dr Turner faces a race against time to immunise local children against polio, and when a Royal visitor comes to the East End, Chummy persuades them to open the new Community Centre. A fascinating portrayal of birth, life, death and a community on the brink of huge social change, Call the Midwife continues to offer a gripping insight into a world that is so drastically different from how we live now"--Container
Peggy and Me by Miranda Hart( Book )

5 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in English and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hello dear book browser and welcome to Peggy and Me. The story of my life since getting a beautiful Shih-Tzu Bichon Frise cross puppy (I call the breed a Shitty Frise - fun) in the form of Peggy. Some of you may be thinking: "a book about a dog, how totally brilliant, I need hear no more, I'm sold." In which case we should be best friends and go out to tea together, every day. Others of you may be thinking: "a book about a dog, how totally mad, she must have officially lost it." In which case I completely understand. For I once viewed dog owners with much suspicion. The way they obsessively talk about their dogs often using voices for them to reply; the way they have a light covering of dog hair all over their clothes and sofas; and worse, an alarming comfort and ease around excrement. But I now get why people become so mad about their hounds. It wasn't instant love I have to admit. Getting a puppy when I was at a low ebb in my life wasn't easy - there was a lot of challenging, what I call, dog administration (dog-min), and the humiliating first trip to the vet still haunts me. It's been a bumpy old road, but Peggy has been lovingly by my side through some life changing moments and I wouldn't have coped without her. Most surprisingly she has taught me a huge amount - not how to get an old pie packet out of a bin and lick it (I could already do that), but real lessons about life and love and trust and friendship. Put aside any doggy reservations and come walkies with Peggy and me

UK comedienne Miranda Hart returns for her third series of Miranda. It doesn't matter what Miranda attempts in life, whether it is dating or simply dealing with her overbearing mother, she always seems to fall flat, quite literally. Miranda is 6 feet 1 inch (1.85m) tall and gets called 'Sir' all too often. She has never fitted in with her old boarding school friends, Tilly (Sally Phillips) and Fanny (Katy Wix), and finds social situations awkward, especially around men. She is a constant disappointment to her mother, Penny (Patricia Hodge), who is desperate for her to get a proper job and a husband. Miranda Hart is a comedy writer and actress whose sitcom Miranda has recently earned her four BAFTA nominations, three RTS awards and three Comedy Awards. It has firmly established her as one of the U.K's leading comedians
