Mit über einem Jahr Verspätung kommt nun doch die irrwitzige Geisterjäger-Klamotte des Neuseeländers Peter Jackson, der bisher vornehmlich mit Splatterkomödien wie "Braindead" überzeugte, in unsere Kinos. Ghostbuster Michael J. Fox treibt Geister aus, die er selber mitgebracht hat, und zieht verschreckten Hausfrauen das Geld aus der Tasche, bis er es mit einem höllisch verliebten Serienmörder zu tun bekommt. Produziert wurde das Hollywood-Spektakel von Robert Zemeckis, dem Regisseur von gepflegten Blockbustern wie "Zurück in die Zukunft" und "Forrest Gump". Das Resultat ist durchgeknallte Unterhaltung auf tricktechnisch hohem Niveau, blutleer und familiengerecht. (tip, 1/98) (...) Stellte Peter Jackson in seinem vorangehenden Film "Heavenly Creatures", mit dem er sich eindrucksvoll über den Splatter-Bereich hinaus profilieren konnte, die Spezialeffekte ganz in den Dienst der Story, so ist es in dem von Robert Zemeckis produzierten "The Frighteners" eher umgekehrt. Zwar bleibt der Ekelgrad in dieser Mischung aus Horrorfilm und Komödie deutlich hinter Jacksons "Braindead" zurück, doch ist sein tabuloser Humor geblieben. Der kommt auch zum Zuge, als der knochige Judge, der gelegentlich seinen Unterkiefer verliert, im Historischen Museum über eine ägyptische Mumie herfällt und den skurrilen Sex im Sarkophag anschließend kommentiert: "I like it when they lie still like that".
