Early cinema : primitives and pioneers by Auguste Lumière( Visual )

5 editions published between 1994 and 2005 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The British Film Institute Film and Video Library compiled this volume of 39 motion pictures originally produced between 1895 and 1905. There is a varied selection of films from the pre-1910 period. Though non-fiction films were the mainstay of production in this period the majority of films included are fiction. The title of the compilation, signaling the 'firsts' of invention, is intended with a little irony; the selection tries to be representative of some of the issues that are currently written about, and taught, rather than a replication of those histories that see 'primitive' filmmaking as a series of progressive movements towards classic narrative cinema. There are included one-shot films where 'editing within the frame' may be as important as the continuity editing of narrative cinema. Many examples are presented from the Lumière brothers, Georges Méliès, Birt Acres, R.W. Paul, George Albert Smith Films, Sheffield Photographic Company, Haggar and Sons, Bamforth and Company Ltd., and Williamson's Kinematograph Company Ltd
