They are lively, good-natured children, but the widowed Captain Von Trapp runs his home with precision and discourages any frivolity. Tested by the children, Maria wins them over. When the Captain returns from Vienna with his fiancee, the Baroness, and Max Detweiler, an impresario who wants the children to enter the Salzburg Festival, Maria leaves because she is in love with the Captain.
