Much of the location footage, filmed in the Arctic for this drama of Eskimo life, was lost in a plane crash. However, consistent with Ray's conception of cinema as a synthetic art apparent in his commitment to mise-en-scene, it was always intended that the important scenes would be filmed in a studio. Ray undertook considerable research into Eskimo life but as the groundwork on which a fiction, akin to a fable or morality play, was built. Despite the problem of dialogue that hovers between poetry (Ray's original intention) and pidgin, the first half is strong on quasi-documentary elements. The mundane fiction - Inuk's choice of a wife - is enlivened by moments drawing on the vitality of Eskimo life. Inuk is a loner amongst outsiders (in common with other Ray heroes) in a harsh utopia threatened by Western civilisation with its imposed laws and attendant technology represented by the trading post and the gun
