The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Man's favorite sport? by Howard Hawks( Visual )

4 editions published between 1963 and 2011 in English and held by 274 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Man's favourite sport is girls" so the Mancini-Mercer title song tells us. But the content of this late return to the genre by a master of screwball comedy is more ambiguous. Rock Hudson is an expert salesman of fishing equipment. When confronted with the practicalities of a fishing contest it transpires that Hudson has never actually fished in his life. He also doesn't understand women who make him continually look ridiculous just as Cary Grant is made to look ridiculous in Bringing Up Baby and I Was a Male War Bride. Molly Haskell sees Hudson and Paula Prentiss as "primordial man and woman, Adam and Eve in the plush, hazardous Eden of a hunting and fishing resort ... saddled with a bitter comical [archetypally American] heritage of sexual distrust, bravado and fear."
