This dramatic story of Julien Sorel, the ambitious son of a carpenter, is set in 1830's France. In this first part, he arrives at the Rénal home in Verrières, where he is to tutor the mayor's two children. He seduces the mayor's wife, Louise and, when gossip about their affair becomes widespread and the mayor suspicious, leaves the Rénal home. He returns to the seminary at Besanc̜on to further his studies for the priesthood. The abbey, Pirard, arranges for him to go to Paris as private secretary to a wealthy and influential nobleman, the Marquis de la Mole. Sorel challenges the rigid social order of the time, which is protected by the army (red) and the church (black)

French cancan : une comédie musicale by Jean Renoir( Visual )

2 editions published in 1955 in Undetermined and English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Synopsis: Nineteenth-century Paris comes vibrantly alive in Jean Renoir's exhilarating tale of the opening of the world-renowned Moulin Rouge. Jean Gabin plays the wily impresario Danglard, who makes the cancan all the rage while juggling the love of two beautiful women-an Egyptian belly-dancer and a naive working girl turned cancan star. This celebration of life, art and the City of Light-with a cameo by Edith Piaf-is a Technicolor tour de force by a master of modern cinema."--Website
