The city of God by Augustine( Book )

9 editions published between 1467 and 1470 in Latin and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Saint Augustine is often regardarded as the most influential Christian thinker after Saint Paul, and City of God is his materpiece, a cast synthesis of religious and secular knowledge. It began as a reply to the charge that Christian otherworldiness was causing the decline of the Roman Empire. Augustine produced a wealth of evidence to prove that paganism bore within itself the seeds of its own destruction. Then he proceeded to his larger theme, a cosmic interpretation of in terms of the struggle between good and evilL the City of God in conflict with the Earthly City or the City of the Devil. This, the first serious attempt at a philosophy of history, was to have incalculable influence in forming the Western mind on the relations of church and state, and on the Christianʹs place in the temporal order. -- Description from http://www.amazon.co.uk/ (Dec. 10, 2012)

Sermons by Leo( Book )

2 editions published in 1470 in Latin and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It would be practically impossible to understand this monumental transition from the Roman world to Christendom without taking into account the pivotal role played by Leo the Great. His sermons provide invaluable data for the social historian. It was Leo - and not the emperor - who went out to confront Attila the Hun. It was Leo who once averted and on another occasion mitigated the ravages of barbarian incursions
Cicero on oratory and orators by Marcus Tullius Cicero( Book )

5 editions published between 1465 and 1469 in Latin and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Contains Cicero{u2019}s De Oratore and Brutus, influential sources over the centuries for ideas on rhetoric and train{u00AD}ing for public leadership. The De Oratore, written in 55 B.C., argues that rhetoric is socially significant because states are established and main{u00AD}tained through the leadership of eloquent men. The three books of dialogues in this volume feature discussions between well-known figures in Roman history, in{u00AD}cluding Lucius Crassus, Marcus An{u00AD}tonius, Quintus Lutatius Catulus, Quin{u00AD}tus Marcius Scaevola, Caius Aurelius Cotta, Julius Caesar Strabo Vopicus, and Publius Sulpicus Rufus. The Brutus continues the theme of the dialogues, giving a history of eminent orators whose performances exemplify the Ciceronian theory that rhetoric final{u00AD}ly adds up to leadership

The Attic nights of Aulus Gellius by Aulus Gellius( Book )

5 editions published between 1469 and 1472 in Latin and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aulus Gellius (c. 123-170 CE) offers in Attic Nights (Gellius began to write these pieces during stays in Athens) a collection of short chapters about notable events, words and questions of literary style, lives of historical figures, legal points, and philosophical issues that served as instructive light reading for cultivated Romans. Aulus Gellius (ca. 123-170 CE) is known almost wholly from his Noctes Atticae, Attic Nights, so called because it was begun during the nights of an Attic winter. The work collects in twenty books (of Book VIII only the index is extant) interesting notes covering philosophy, history, biography, all sorts of antiquities, points of law, literary criticism, and lexicographic matters, explanations of old words and questions of grammar. The work is valuable because of its many excerpts from other authors whose works are lost; and because of its evidence for people's manners and occupations. Some at least of the dramatic settings may be genuine occasions. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Attic Nights is in three volumes
