Gert Scobel introduces, in this program to honor Brecht, the musical social satire set in Victorian London, in which both government and underworld are portrayed as amoral and polluted by economic and political chaos. Polly Peachum, daughter of the king of the beggars, with the help of Mackie Messer and his gang, opens a bank in the belief that legal thievery is more profitable than larceny. In the end, Polly's father, Mackie, and the corrupt police commissioner become partners in the bank and mainstays of society

L'Opera de quat' sous : Die 3 groschenoper by Kurt Weill( Visual )

1 edition published in 1998 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the early years of the sound era film producers often made films in different language versions, using the same sets but different casts. Pabst's twin versions of The threepenny opera shot in German and French make absorbing viewing. Set in a shadowy, stylised and dreamlike Victorian London, the story of Mack the Knife and Polly Peachum is timeless and the combination of Brecht's satire and Weill's music is as fresh as ever
Der gebieterische Ruf by Gustav Ucicky( Visual )

3 editions published between 1944 and 2012 in German and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This dvd contains two films produced in Germany during the Nazi era, Die Deutsche Wochenschau and Der Gebieterische Ruf. The first, Die Deutsche Wochenschau, is a German newsreel which might have played in front of the feature film. The newsreel begins with footage of German women working in support of the war effort in factories and as fire fighters. We then move to the war in France as American troops advance towards Germany. The film ends with scenes of hundreds of young German recruits boardin trains that will take them to the eastern front. In the feature film, Der Gebieterische Ruf, Christine has become the medical assistant to the famous Viennese surgeon, Professor Wichmann. After working together for some time, he asks her if she will be his wife. After some deliberation she agrees. Because of an emergency, the professor is called from their honeymoon back to the hospital. The actor Ferdinand Hofer has been brought to the hospital and must be operated on as soon as possible. For Christine, Ferdinand is not just another patient, they were once lovers. When Christine sees Ferdinand again in the hospital, she confesses that she is still in love with him

Zur Chronik von Grieshuus( Visual )

3 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in German and No Linguistic content and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil's The threepenny opera( Visual )

2 editions published in 1995 in German and English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Reconstructed in the sixties- years after the original negative was destroyed by the Nazis- G.W. Pabst's Threepenny opera remains a deliciously dark film adaptation of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil's brillant musical. A master of atmosphere, Pabst combines realism and expressionism for a biting satire of 'respectable' society. Foggy sets by Andre Andreiev and Fritz Arno Wagner's stunning cinematography pull us down into the seedy underworld of 1890's London. There a dashing thief called 'Mack the Knife' gets away with robbery on a daily basis until he marries the daughter of Soho's 'Beggar King.' When the outraged King sends a force of crooked cops after Mack, the bandit must run for his life."--Box
