The borough of Dundalk, Co. Louth, returned two members to the Irish House of Commons. The constituency was controlled by the Earl of Clanbrassill, who in 1783 secured the return of his nephews Lord Jocelyn and the Hon. George Jocelyn. The defeated candidates, John William Foster and Richard Dawson, appealed unsuccessfully against the verdict, claiming that the votes of 18 freemen who supported them had been rejected. See E.M. In the general election of 1776 the Roscommon constituency was contested by Messrs Mahon, Crofton and French. French, the defeated candidate, challenged Crofton's election "on the grounds of excessive entertainment and the lack of qualification of some of his voters".
