Donald A. Henderson, dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, went to Oberlin College and then to the University of Rochester Medical School. He decided to go into public health after he worked as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer dealing with an outbreak of diptheria in Phoenix, Alabama in 1955. He worked closely with the National Office of Vital Statistics, then located in Washington, D.C. The office was eventually transferred to Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga. The report Dr. Henderson developed became the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. He also worked with the World Health Organization on the eradication of smallpox in the 1960s. He was instrumental in developing modern health centers where people could come and bring their children to receive curative medicine and vaccines.
