High temperature semiconducting compounds for thermoelectric power generation( Book )

4 editions published between 1961 and 1962 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Several runs were made in the high-pressure furnace with the object of synthesizing sulfides of U and of Th. The first run was made using only a small amount of the reactants (U turnings and S) and raising the emperature very slowly to 780 C. After cooling, the reaction product appeared to be an inhomogeneous mixture of sulfides varying in color from brown to dark gray. An attempt to identify the specimen by X-ray diffraction failed. In a second run, U and S were heated to about 2000 C. X-ray diffraction gave a weak pattern of uranium monosulfide, but the presence of other phases cannot thereby be ruled out. The result of a third run, in which U and S were again heated to 2000 C, was an ingot which appeared to have completely melted, and which had a bright metallic luster. An attempt to identify the substance b X-ray diffraction, resulted in a film on which no reflections appeared, and only a light background. Subsequently, a pattern was obtained; however, all attempts to identify the pattern have failed. (Author)
Research on high temperature strain gage elements by Chester B Jordan( Book )

2 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This project was concerned with an attempt to find materials for use as strain gages at tem peratures above 2000 F (1093 C). Five materials were investigated: silicon carbide, silicon, pyrolytic graphite, rutile, and gallium phos phide. The gage factors of these materials were measured in the temperature range of 25 C (77 F) to 750 C (1382 F). The gage factor of silicon carbide was found to be very small even at room temperature, and none of the other mate rials appeared to offer any possibility of re taining a useful gage factor at 2000 F. How ever, several results which may well be of prac tical value were obtained: the usefulness of silicon as a strain gage was extended to about 650 C (1202 F) by a new contacting process, silicon carbide was found to be a good tempera ture sensor over a wide range of temperature, and rutile was found to be a good oxygen sensor over a fairly wide range of elevated temperature. Investigation of the effect of ultra-rapid quenching on metallic systems, including beryllium alloys by C Jordan( Book )

3 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Open-ended Terms: Quenching. Progress is reported of an investigation of the effect of ultra-rapid quenching on certain alloys of Be. The experimental techniques previously developed were applied with only minor modifications to alloys of the systems Be-O, Be-Al, Be-Si, Be-Sc, Be-Ni, Be-Cu, and Be-Zn. No changes in phase appear to have been induced by ultra-rapid quenching in most of the alloys tested, although a shift of lattice parameter has been observed in several. Definite phase changes appear to have been induced in one Be-Cu alloy and in two Be-Ni alloys, but these result are subject to further confirmation. (Author)

Development and evaluation of crystalline electro-optical shutters( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report describes the theoretical and experimental results obtained in a program of research aimed at the development of Pockels shutters as anti-flash devices. A theoretical analysis of the Pockels effect in all 32 crystal symmetry classes was carried out, and the results are presented here in summary form, and more completely in a separate report. Progress of the experimental program directed toward the growth of large single crystals of zincblende is also described. (Author)
