May 9, 2010) is interviewed at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel by KPFA's Gene De Alessi in conjunction with the release of her autobiography. She was the first black performer to be signed to a long-term contract by a major Hollywood studio, and went on to achieve international fame as a singer.
