A classic from 1958 by Jean Rouch, one of the pivotal figures in the French New Wave and in the history of ethnographic cinema. An innovative improvised feature film about young men from Niger struggling to survive as immigrant workers in the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan. Another of Rouch?s ethno-fictions, MOI, UN NOIR pre-dated most of the key works of the French zNew Wave" and was an inspiration for the new movement. It was praised by Godard (The greatest French film since the Liberation) and others and demonstrated what could be done with light-weight camera equipment, improvised action and an informal narrative style. In 1977, Jacques Rivette reflected that Rouch is the force behind all French cinema of the past ten years, although few people realise it
