Reds by Warren Beatty( Visual )

19 editions published between 1981 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 1,547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beatty's project to make a film based on the life of John Reed gestated for more than a decade. Reed was a politically committed journalist and activist living on the margins of respectable society whose involvement in radical American politics took him to Russia in 1917. Beatty saw parallels between radical politics in the sixties and Reed's life and times. Inevitably Beatty elevated romance, notably Reed's relationship with Louise Bryant, above politics. Nevertheless, his decision to use more than 30 'witnesses' as a kind of chorus to complement the drama was both daring and innovative for a big budget Hollywood production, as is his montage approach to the drama in the first half of the film. The witnesses bring multiple and contending perspectives in describing social spectacle and making comments on the historical personalities represented in the biopic

He renounced his vocation, and is now an archaeologist in Africa. A collector of rare comes to him with an odd request. An old Christian Byzantine church has been unearthed in Kenya, surprisingly intact, as if it were buried right after its completion. Merrin is asked to find an ancient relic hidden within the church before a British expedition can. Interested, Merrin agrees to take the job. Beneath the church, something much older and malevolent sleeps, waiting to be awoken. The blood of innocents flows freely, but the horror has only just begun. Cinematographer style( Visual )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Belying what many think of as the technical orientation of their job, cinematographers can be remarkably loquacious, a fact evident from the beginning of the interviews with 110 prominent practitioners of the craft. The men and women interviewed are interested in discussing the aesthetics and emotional content of light, composition, movement, and color--the building blocks of the film image. Forget directors, actors, and screenwriters: based on this documentary, nobody talks as passionately or poetically about the art of film as cinematographers
