Esther, avant-dernière tragédie de Racine, fut écrite pour les "Demoiselles" de la Maison Royale de Saint-Cyr, créée à l'initiative de Mme de Maintenon, épouse de Louis XIV. Elle y fut créée devant un public de courtisans au carnaval de 1689 et inaugura dans cette institution une éphémère tradition de théâtre à intermèdes musicaux. La musique fait intervenir un ensemble instrumental à trois parties (prélude, ouverture, entracte), un choeur formé des jeunes filles de la suite d'Esther, des solos et des ensembles vocaux. Bien qu'elle ait été conçue pour voix de femmes, la musique de Moreau peut aussi être interprétée par un ensemble de voix mixtes. Cette édition présente pour la première fois le texte déclamé, conservé en orthographe ancienne, et l'intégralité de la musique établie d'après les sources contemporaines de la création de l'oeuvre.
