An epic story of pioneer life tracing the struggles of three generations of settlers with the five sons of Matthew and Jane O'Riordan finally establishing a foothold on the wild Lamington Plateau. A good deal of the film was shot on location in Queensland under very difficult physical conditions which extended shooting well beyond schedule. The film took eighteen months to complete. It was a commercial success, particularly in Australia, and is widely regarded as Chauvel's finest film
