Black males left behind by Ronald B., Ed Mincy( Book )

6 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 641 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite the overall economic gains in the 1990s, many young black men continue to have the poorest life chances of anyone in our society. Joblessness and low earnings among these less-educated young adults are contributing to reductions in marriage, increases in nonmarital childbearing, and a host of other social problems. In "Black Males Left Behind," Ronald Mincy has assembled a distinguished group of experts who examine how less-educated black men fared relative to other less-educated young people during the economic expansion of the 1990s and why. Chapters explore the roles of the macroeconomy, the deconcentration of blue-collar employment, criminal justice policy, and the employment aspirations of young less-educated black men and consider their implications for the design of employment services, welfare-to-work policies, workforce development policy, and child support enforcement. Two chapters comprehensively review policy opportunities to assist less-educated young black fathers and discuss how to overcome political resistance to initiatives serving less-educated black men. This book makes a compelling case for greater public attention to a serious domestic problem

The contributors to this volume argue that (black) fathers must be brought back into the picture, especially in a social context in which a huge absolute percentage of black families are single-parent, female-headed households and in which African Americans, especially young black men, face an alarmingly high lifetime probability of incarceration
Failing our fathers : confronting the crisis of economically vulnerable, nonresident fathers by Ronald B Mincy( Book )

6 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Slandered as irresponsible, deadbeat dads, nonresident fathers are a greatly misunderstood population. These fathers are overlooked in discussions of poverty and economic vulnerability-often being viewed as the cause of social problems, rather than as having been abandoned by society. In Failing our Fathers, Ron Mincy and his colleagues present a more comprehensive picture of how these men face significant obstacles and explore unintended effects of policies designed to secure financial support for their children, the effectiveness of the few policies that have been designed to offer relief. 2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Black Fatherhood Project offers context and conversation in this honest exploration of fatherhood in Black America. Through a telling of his own story and interviews with historians, filmmaker Jordan Thierry traces the roots of the fatherless Black home and reveals a history much complex and profound than is often told. Putting that history into perspective is a dialogue among fathers discussing their experiences, inspirations, and insight on how communities can come together to ensure the power of a father's love is not lost on America's Black children"--Container

Strengthening fragile families( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a nationally representative survey of births in large cities, has shown that unwed parents have a host of characteristics that complicate getting good jobs, forming stable families, and performing successfully as parents. Within five years after the birth, a third of children born to unmarried parents see their father less than once a month, 55 percent of mothers have formed new relationships, and children are already showing problems in test performance and behavior. We recommend policies to support single parents, to prevent unwed births, to reduce the number of young men given long prison sentences, and to fund at least some federal demonstration programs that provide marriage education and services to these young couples -- p.1
