Ernest Hemingway's The killers by Robert Siodmak( Visual )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ernest Hemingway's simple but gripping short tale "The Killers" is a model of economical storytelling. Two directors adapted it into unforgettably virile features: Robert Siodmak, in a 1946 film that helped define the noir style; and Don Siegel, in a brutal 1964 version that was intended for television but deemed too violent for home audiences and released theatrically instead. The first is poetic and shadowy, the second direct and harsh as daylight, but both get at the heart of Hemingway's existential classic

The Killers( Visual )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two versions of the same feature film made in 1946 and 1964. Hemingway's short story provided an absurdist framework for a Citizen Kane-like reconstruction of a man's life. At the centre of a corrupt world of crime is a particularly duplicitous femme fatale. The insurance agent's search for the reason why a man allows himself to be killed, provides the convoluted flashback structure. Like the search for 'Rosebud' in Kane, the inquiry seems increasingly irrelevant. Time is disjointed and overlapping. The past hangs heavily on the present. Unbalanced masses of dark and light and menacing objects dominate the characters. DVD
