Der Amerikanische Bürgerkrieg 1862: Das 304. Nordstaaten-Regiment wird in einem zermürbenden Drill auf den Einsatz vorbereitet. Als der junge Soldat Henry Fleming hört, dass anderntags seine erste Schlacht bevorsteht, packen ihn starke Ängste und Selbstzweifel. Seine Kameraden freuen sich indes auf den Kampf und prahlen mit ihrem Mut. Bereits auf dem Marsch zur Front sind die ersten gefallenen Soldaten zu sehen. Henrys Freund Tom Wilson gibt ihm seine Wertsachen, weil er glaubt, bald zu sterben. Henry ist der Anspannung nicht gewachsen und versucht, zu fliehen. Ein anderer Deserteur seines Regiments schlägt ihn dabei nieder. So wird Henry verletzt gefunden und von einem lakonischen älteren Soldaten zurückgebracht, der allen Kummer Gott überantwortet. Henry kann seine gescheiterte Flucht als tapferen Kampf mit dem Feind darstellen. Als er jedoch seinen siegreichen, aber verletzten Kameraden begegnet, plagen ihn starke Schuldgefühle. Er sieht deren blutige Wunden als "rote Tapferkeitsmedaillen". Henrys älterer Kamerad Jim schleppt sich indes mit einer Schussverletzung davon und bricht vor ihm tot zusammen. Wenig später trifft Henry auch Tom wieder, dem seine forschen Sprüche über das Heldentum längst vergangen sind. Zum Nachdenken bleibt jedoch keine Zeit. Das nächste Gefecht steht bevor. Mit dem Mut der Verzweiflung stürmt Henry mit seinem Gewehr zur vordersten Frontlinie. Ohne das es ihm bewusst wird, überwindet er seine Ängste.
