Hauser (1833-1914) was a Helena, Montana, Territory, pioneer, territorial governor (1885-1886), and entrepreneur in the fields of banking, mining, smelting, ranching, railroads, irrigation, and hydro-electric power. More than fifty percent of the collection is incoming correspondence (1864-1914). There are also outgoing correspondence, financial records, legal documents, organizational records, and reports. Included are thirty-eight subgroups of the Hauser family and Hauser's business enterprises.

in English and held by 1 library worldwide Three letters to his sister, Susan Emeline Hauser, describe an 1862 voyage up the Missouri River on the steamboat Emilie from St. Joseph to Fort Benton and overland to the Bitter Root Mountains (WA MSS 250). Samuel Hauser was attempting to reach the Salmon River mines. His 1870 diary covers the Washburn-Langford Expedition from Helena to Yellowstone Lake. The journal contains notes, addresses, mathematical calculations, accounts, six maps and two pencil sketches. There are three printed accounts of the expedition (WA MSS 249).

Hauser papers consist mainly of business correspondence and papers concerning his various mining and power company interests; together with a letter he wrote to his sister in 1862 during a trip up the Missouri River to Fort Benton and through the Bitterroot Mountains; Hauser's certificate as the appointed commissioner to represent the Territory of Montana at the centennial celebration of George Washington's inauguration; pictures of the 1908 wreckage of Hauser Dam; and a photograph of Hauser. Also included are photocopies of a letter from Fanny Clark Fitzhugh to her daughter and a deed for the loan of a slave to Fitzhugh's husband (Fitzhugh was the sister of Capt. William Clark and the grandmother of Hauser's wife).
