David Barr is an ambitious shipbuilder who hits upon a design for a new type of cargo ship. He takes his plans to the heads of his company, but they turn him down. A rival builder, Manning, offers to buy the design from him but he refuses and attempts to set up on his own. Manning, however, dispatches two of his own men to infiltrate and disrupt Barr's workforce. When they are discovered, they are thrown out but in return blow up the ship. Now Barr is in financial difficulty, but still determined to carry on
