"When Edith Doray comes to Judge Blake's juvenile court to get information for her women's club meeting, the judge encourages her to sit with him and observe during the day's cases. Judge Blake, a sympathetic listener who stresses that a right attitude will help a boy make good, allows a boy arrested for joyriding, Arthur Simpson, an orphan living with his poor, mean-spirited aunt and her children, to go free after he promises not to take any more cars. After Art prevents Edith's dog from being hit by a truck, she asks her husband Jack, a druggist, to give Art a job after school. Despite Art's reputation as 'the worst kid in town, ' Jack, though dubious, gives in to his wife's entreaty. As Art walks to school with his friend, Edward Beamish, an orphan known as 'Nutty' who lives with his grandmother, they see a new kid, Bull Butler, getting fresh with Mabel Saunders, whom Art likes. After Art intercedes, Bull harasses the diminutive Nutty, taking his glasses. Art's subsequent fight with Bull is interrupted by the school bell, but during class, when Bull persists in calling Nutty 'four eyes, ' Art fights Bull. Art is suspended and then, after school, is beaten by Bull. When he shows up late for work, Jack fires him. Art is invited by Nutty's kindly, but poor grandmother to stay with them after his aunt chases him with a stick upon learning about his suspension. That night, 'Granny' is struck with one of her recurring spells. Art and Nutty go to the drug store to get medicine, but after finding it vacant and the Dorays not at home, they sneak into the store. Officer Weems catches Art, and he is sent again to Judge Blake's courtroom. Nutty's and Granny's testimonies lead the judge to give the two boys a suspended sentence with the provision that they are not to see or speak to each other. When Art's aunt refuses to take him back, Edith, despite Jack's arguments, offers to take responsibility for him to keep him from being sent to the state institution. Later, when Nutty tries to speak with Art and Art refuses, Nutty throws mud on him. A week after this incident, when Art is home alone one night, Granny comes and says that Nutty is very ill and has been begging to see him. Art takes money from the house to buy medicine and visits Nutty, who dies after Art says that they still are pals. When Art returns to the Dorays', he sees them in the window arguing about him and realizes that his presence is disrupting their marriage. He acts belligerent to Edith and leaves, having convinced her and Jack that he wants to be no good. The next day, however, they learn about Nutty's death, and Jack goes to find Art. The boy plans to leave town and send for Granny once he has settled, but he witnesses two men hold up and knock out Jack, and he is then taken by the holdup men into their car. When Jack and Officer Weems pursue them and one of the holdup men is about to shoot Jack, Art grabs the wheel and causes the car to fall over an embankment. When Art recovers, Jack agrees to adopt him"--AFI catalog, 1931-1940
