NEUTRON-PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING FROM 2 TO 7 GeV/e( Book )

1 edition published in 1969 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Direct measurements were made of neutron-proton elastic scattering differential cross sections at high energies. A neutron beam with a continuous momentum spectrum between 1.2 and 6.7 GeV/c was scattered off a liquid hydrogen target, and spark chambers were used to determine the neutron scattering angle and, in a proton spectrometer, to measure the momentum and scattering angle of the recoil proton. Differential cross sections are presented over the incident neutron momentum range in intervals of the order of 1/2 GeV/c wide. Values are presented for the slope of the diffraction peak, and comparisons are made between these slopes, and the 90 degrees c.m. cross sections, for pp and np elastic scattering. At 5 GeV a direct comparison of pp and np data allows the I=0 differential cross section to be extracted. (Author)

Elastic scattering of negative pions by protons at bev/c( Book )

1 edition published in 1963 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The negative pion-proton differential elastic cross section at an incident pion momentum of 2 Bev/c has been measured in a spark chamber experiment. Approximately 7000 events were obtained in the center of mass angular range .95 greater than cos theta asterisk greater than -.97. The data show an approximately ex ponential diffraction peak which when extrapo lated to cos theta asterisk 1.0 is con sistent with the optical theorem prediction. A second peak, with a maximum of 23 mb/sr is seen at cos theta asterisk .2. The backward s ering is not isotropic, but drops smoothly from .12 mb/sr at cos theta asterisk 0 to about .01 mb/sr at the most backward angles. An analysis in terms of a simple diffraction model and a fit in powers of cos theta asterisk are given. (Author)
