From the Publisher: Called "The Black Pope" by many of his followers, Anton La Vey began the road to High Priesthood of the Clurch of Satan when he was only 16 years old and an organ player in a carnival: "On Saturday night I would see men lusting after half naked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing the organ for tent-show evangelists at the other end of the carnival lot, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday night they'd be back at The carnival or some other place of indulgence. "I knew then that the Christian Church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man's carnal nature will out!" From that time early in his life his path was clear. Finally, on the last night of April, 1966-Walpurgisnacht, the most important festival of the believers in witchcraft-LaVey shaved his head in the tradition of Ancient executioners and announced the formation of The Church Of Satan. He had seen the need for a church that would recapture man's body and his carnal desires as objects of celebration. "Since worship of fleshly things produces pleasure," he said, "there would then be a temple of glorious indulgence"

The Late Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, may be most notoriously familiar for his Satanic Bible, but The Satanic Witch best reflects the discoveries Anton made in his younger days working the carny shows and Mitt Camps. This is undiluted Gypsy lore regarding the forbidden knowledge of seduction and manipulation. The Satanic Witch is not designed for Barbie Dolls, but women cunning and crafty enough to employ the workable formulas within, which instantly surpass the entire catalogue of self-help tomes and New Age idiocies

Three orbs appear before the main title. The film proper begins with a close-up of Anger standing before a star-patterned backdrop. He gazes at a naked man reclining on a divan. Appropriated footage of soldiers leaping from a helicopter is cut in. Implying that war is a ritual like any other, the next scene shows young people passing around a marijuana cigarette and playing instruments. A robed figure appears in smoke, waving a wand. A close-up of a spider tattoo is shown, then a ritual with a ram's head and magick symbols is performed. A man dressed as a devil enters the ceremony, followed by footage of men in leather jackets (a group of Hell's Angels). The Nazi flag is used in the ceremony. People in costumes and robes playing instruments walk down a staircase. This is followed by quick cuts of Mick Jagger performing at a concert before a wild throng--a rock concert can be a ritual like any other. The film ends with a naked young man standing, arms outstretched, with a spiral projected on his body. The soundtrack throughout the film consists of manipulated white noise, sounding at times like gunfire or a siren

Collection of films by Kenneth Anger. "A major influence on everything from the films of Martin Scorese, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and David Lynch to the pop art of Andy Warhol to MTV, Anger's work serves as a talisman of universal symbols and personal obsessions, combining myth, artifice and ritual to render cinema with the power of spell or incantation." -- Container
