Caravaggio and his legacy by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"They were known as the "Caravaggisti"--Artists who imitated the 16th-century master's earthy, realistic style or subject matter. Caravaggio's impact on his contemporaries was immediate, but in the decades that followed his brief career, hundreds of artists drew inspiration from his innovative use of intense light and shadow, the distinctly theatrical atmosphere of his paintings, his use of religious imagery, and his preference for painting directly from life. This companion volume to an exhibition features works by Caravaggio and more than 30 other artists. The book displays an amazing cross section of genre, portraiture, historical subjects, and religious scenes. Bringing together previously unconnected painters from Italy, Northern Europe, France, and Spain, this remarkable collection brilliantly illustrates Caravaggio's enormous effect on the development of 17th-century European painting"--

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Mr and Mrs A.L. Walsh were amongst the original residents of the Cabin Homes at Salisbury and have remained in the district ever since. Mr Walsh, a carpenter, came to Salisbury earlier in the war years to build munition factory buildings. He was able to bring his family to Salisbury when the first of the Cabin Homes were available. Mrs Walsh remembers Salisbury at this time as one of the 'unfriendliest country towns' she'd ever been in and they both describe the problems involved in the lack of facilities and services provided to the new residents. Mrs Walsh became involved with the Progress Association and after the war helped the migrants moving into the area through her activities with the Country Women's Association, the Red Cross and the Good Neighbour Council

The image of the tuba by Amy Walsh( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: "The tuba is battling an image problem. The first serious olo music was composed for tuba over fifty years ago but the tuba is still seen as the clown of the orchestra. It is used for comic effect in ballets, cartoons, and stories for children. The stereotypical image of the tuba, and those who pay them, has been the centre of a lot of debate... Semiotics, the study of signs and images and their interpretation, emerged as formal philosophical thought in ancient Greece and has remained an integral part of the philosophical tradition of Western culture, if not always on a conscious level. In this thesis images and newspaper articles relating to the tuba have been examined to identify and interpret comic elemnets and the reasons for the. This thesis will demonstrate through a semiotic approach that the stereotypical image of the tuba is heavily influenced by auditory images and especially by physical images. Images of tubas in funny situations have become so ingrained on a subconscious level with the sight and sound of a real tuba that it is difficult for them to be separated. Even tuba players often do not take themselves seriously as musicians."
American paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by N.Y.) Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York( )

in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of American paintings is outstanding and includes many famous works. This volume, the second in a series of three, documents an impressive collection of some 285 paintings dating from the late 1830s to the first decade of the twentieth century. The second generation of the Hudson River school is superbly represented by the landscapes of Albert Bierstadt, Frederic E. Church, Jasper F. Cropsey, John F. Kensett, Sanford R. Gifford, and Worthington Whittredge. Most notable, perhaps, is the Museum's important collection of realist paintings by Eastman Johnson, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Eakins. These include such renowned works as Corn Husking at Nantucket, Snap the Whip, The Gulf Stream, and Max Schmitt in a Single Scull. James McNeill Whistler and Mary Cassatt are equally well represented by a choice group of paintings that show the beginnings of the Aesthetic movement on the one hand and impressionism on the other

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of American paintings is an outstanding one and includes many famous works. This volume offers an impressive survey of the late nineteenth century segment of the collection. Most notable, perhaps, are the Museum's extensive holdings of paintings by John Singer Sargent, including his celebrated Madame X. Represented too are some of the best trompe l'oeil works by William Michael Harnett, John F. Peto, and John Haberle; important impressionist paintings by J. Alden Weir, Theodore Robinson, and Childe Hassam; as well as fine examples of the academic style. These paintings represent the work of American artists from the post Civil War era through the early twentieth century. Covering the entire period are some 247 works by such painters as Albert Pinkham Ryder, Ralph Blakelock, William Merritt Chase, Thomas Dewing, Cecilia Beaux, Maurice Prendergast, Frederic Remington, and Arthur B. Davies. The paintings are thoroughly discussed and each one is reproduced. They are arranged chronologically by the dates of the artists. Artists' biographies are included, as well as exhibition histories, provenance, and bibliographic references. Related works, preliminary drawings and studies, or copies, prints, and replicas, are listed and often also illustrated
