Resumptive pronouns at the interfaces by Alain Rouveret ( )
12 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 772 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book brings together contributions which address a wide range of issues regarding resumption, gathering evidence from a great variety of languages including Welsh, Breton, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, French, Vata, Hebrew, Jordanian and Palestinian Arabic. The topics covered include the interpretive properties of resumptive pronouns and epithets, the featural make-up of resumptive pronouns, as well as the syntactic diversity of resumptive constructions and the nature of A-resumption. The introduction offers a critical survey of early syntactic accounts and recent semantic advancements.

3 editions published between 1996 and 2007 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
THIS THESIS DEALS WITH THE CLAUSE STRUCTURE AND THE SYNTAX OF NEGATION IN STANDARD AND MOROCCAN ARABIC. THE ANALYSIS OF NEGATION GOES THROUGH A CORRECT UNDERSTANDING OF THE CLAUSE STRUCTURE, WHICH IS ITSELF PARTLY DEPENDENT ON THE MORPHOLOGY-SYNTAX CONNECTION. THE MORPHOLOGY-SYNTAX CONNECTION IS ANALYSED IN THE FIRST CHAPTER, BASED ON N. CHOMSKY'S (1965 AND 1992) AND M. HALLE AND A. MARANTZ'S (1992) THEORIES. FOR THE SPECIFIC CASE OF STANDARD ARABIC, THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS ARE PROPOSED IN THE THESIS : . EVERY CATEGORY WHOSE MORPHOLOGICAL HEAD IS A SUFFIX SPELLED OUT AS A COMBINAISON OF (PERSON-NUMBER)FEATURES IS VERBAL. . EVERY CATEGORY WHOSE MORPHOLOGICAL HEAD IS A SUFFIX SPELLED OUT AS A COMBINAISON OF (NUMBER-CASE) FEATURES IS NOMINAL. . THE PERFECTIVE AND IMPERFECTIVE VERBS IN STANDARD ARABIC ARE THEREFORE MORPHOLOGICALLY AND CATEGORIALLY DIFFERENT : THE PERFECTIVE VERB IS A VERBAL CATEGORY. THE IMPERFECTIVE VERB IS A NOMINAL CATEGORY. THE CLAUSE STRUCTURE OF STANDARD ARABIC IS DELT WITH IN THE SECOND CHAPTER. THE PERFECTIVE VERB IS ANALYSED AS A VERBAL PREDICATE WHOSE EXTENDED PROJECTION IS PERSP. THE IMPERFECTIVE VERB IS TREATED AS A PARTICIPIAL CATEGORY AND IS ANALYSED SYNTACTICALLY AS A COMPLEX DP PROJECTION, WHICH COMBINES IN ONE FUNCTIONAL STRUCTURE A NOMINALIZED VERB AND AN EXTENDED DP PROJECTION. THE SYNTAX OF NEGATION IN STANDARD ARABIC AND MOROCCAN ARABIC IS TREATED IN THE THIRD CHAPTER. IN STANDARD ARABIC, THE CLAUSE STRUCTURE OF A NEGATIVE SENTENCE CONTAINS TWO TENSE CATEGORIES, T1 AND T2. T2 IS FUNCTIONALLY RELATED TO NEG, AND T1 IS LEXICALLY RELATED TO V. NEG IN STANDARD ARABIC SELECTS A NULL TENSE WHICH HAS NO MORPHOLOGICAL CONTENT. IN MOROCCAN ARABIC, NEG SELECTS A MORPHOLOGICAL TENSE, AND THE TENSE CATEGORY IN THE NEGATIVE SENTENCE IS LEXICALLY RELATED TO THE VERB
La reduplication syntaxique et la structure du groupe verbal en mandarin, en anglais et en d'autres langues by Jules Gouguet ( Book )
2 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
2 editions published in 1993 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
IN THIS THESIS, WE HAVE ANALYSED UNDER THE PERSPECTIVE OF GENERATIVE GRAMMAR OF SYNTAX AND MORPHOLOGY OF CLITIC PRONOUN IN ARABIC. AFTER A GENERAL PRESENTATION OF DIFFERENT FORMS OF PRONOUNS, WE HAVE UNDERLINED THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE CLITIC PRONOUN. THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT FROM AGREEMENT AND NOUN PHRASE. MOREOVER, IT IS NOT A MORPHOLOGICAL HEAD BUT A SYNTACTIC ONE. IN THE LIGHT OF THE THEMATIC DEPENDANCE SYSTEM, WE HAVE EXPLAINED WHY THE OCCURENCE OF THE CLITIC IS POSSIBLE IN SOME SYNTACTIC POSITIONS AND IMPOSSIBLE IN OTHERS. IN OUR MORPHOSYNTACTIC ANALYSIS OF THE SENTENCE, SOME STRUCTURAL AUTONOMY. IN OPPOSITION THE TRADITION APPROCH, WE HAVE ANALYSED THE SO-CALLED NOMINAL SENTENCE IN THE SAME WAY AS THE VERBAL SENTENCE. WE HAVE ALSO SUPPOSED THAT EVEN THE VERB CAN BE CASE-MARKET LIKE THE NOUN AND ADJECTIVE. IN THE TERMS OF MINIMALITE. THEORY, WE HAVE PROPOSED A GENERAL SYSTEM OF INCORPORATION IN ARABIC SHOWS WHICH CATEGORY CAN INCORPORATED IN ANOTHER ONE. FURTHERMORE, WE HAVE STUDIED THE PROBLEM OF THE CLITIC RELATION OF THE DIRECT OBJECT THE INDIRECT OBJECT ON ONE HAND, AND THE TO AGREEMENT ON THE OTHER HAND. FINALLY, WE HAVE FORMULATED A NEW ALL-ENCOMPASSIG STRUCTURE OF THE CLITIC PRONOUN IN WHICH, EVERY CLITIC MUST BE CONDITIONED ANOTHER ELEMNT FUNCTIONNING AS ITS COMPLEMENT
Cas structuraux et dépendances syntaxiques des expressions nominales en finnois by Marc-Antoine Mahieu ( Book )
2 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
IN THIS DISSERTATION, WE FIRST DESCRIBE THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRUCTURAL CASE MORPHEMES ON THE VERB'S ARGUMENTS IN FINNISH, AND WE THEN CLAIM THAT THIS DISTRIBUTION IS BEST EXPLAINED AS A CONSEQUENCE OF SYNTACTIC FUNCTIONING. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN AN APPROPRIATE DESCRIPTION, WE DISTINGUISH THE TYPOLOGICAL LEVEL (HOW ARE THE VERB'S ARGUMENTS MARKED?) FROM THE MORPHOLOGICAL LEVEL (WHAT IS THE IDENTITY OF THE MORPHEMES INVOLVED IN CASE-MARKING?). ON THE TYPOLOGICAL LEVEL, FINNISH PRESENTS AN ANTI-ERGATIVE CASE SYSTEM SPLIT BY PERSONAL PRONOUNS. ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL LEVEL, THE ANTI-ERGATIVE MARKER IS A GENITIVE, AND THE ABSENCE OF MARKING CORRESPONDS EITHER TO THE NOMINATIVE CASE OR TO A DEFAULT FORM. ONLY PERSONAL PRONOUNS CAN BEAR THE ACCUSATIVE CASE, WHICH HISTORICALLY IS DERIVED FROM A SPECIFIC PLURAL MORPHEME. THE PROPOSED EXPLANATION IS BASED ON THE LAST VERSION OF CHOMSKY'S THEORY, TO WHICH WE MAKE A FEW ADJUSTMENTS. IN THIS THEORY, STRUCTURAL CASE MORPHEMES ARE DIRECT REFLEXES OF ABSTRACT CASE VALUES, ASSIGNED TO NOMINAL EXPRESSIONS UNDER SYNTACTIC AGREEMENT WITH CERTAIN FUNCTIONAL HEADS. OUR MAIN IDEA IS THAT THE PROPERTIES OF THE LOWER PART OF THE CLAUSE, COMBINED WITH THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF SYNTAX, ARE THE ONES WHICH EXPLAIN THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRUCTURAL CASES AND PARTITIVE CASE IN FINNISH. THE HIGHER PART OF THE CLAUSE DETERMINES INDEPENDENTLY THE WORD ORDER PHENOMENA, USUALLY ATTRIBUTED TO THE EXISTENCE OF A RICH CASE MORPHOLOGY. THE CONCLUSION CONTAINS A DISCUSSION ABOUT ERGATIVITY IN THE INUIT LANGUAGE
La représentation syntaxique du temps le cas de l'hébreu moderne, de l'arabe standard et dialectal by Nora Boneh ( Book )
1 edition published in 2003 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This dissertation investigates the temporal systems of Standard Arabic, Syrian Arabic and Modern Hebrew. The syntactic configuration put forward in this thesis is based on the idea that tense and aspect are to be defined by the same set of relations holding between time spans. The relations between each pair of time spans are encoded by two syntactic categories. Cross-linguistically, either both categories or only one of them can be made to be structurally visible. It is suggested, that in Hebrew, the higher temporal category is rendered structurally visible, while in Arabic (Standard and Syrian), it is the lowest of them two. Arguments for this syntactic configuration come from two distinct domains : non-finite clauses et non-verbal predicates in the present tense. These domains of investigation were chosen because they permit to examine the structural manifestation of temporality by (partly) dissociating inflection from the lexical verb carrying it. The present analysis shows explicitly that Modern Hebrew is a tense prominent language and that Arabic is an aspectual one. The theoretical contribution of this dissertation is showing the temporality is derived in the syntax and that its source is not one fixed position in the syntactic hierarchy
Relativisation, parataxe et syntaxe en occitan et en français by Jean Feuillet ( Book )
1 edition published in 2003 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This thesis is born of a triple interest : - an interest in Romance linguistics and dialectology : I propose to ascribe the fragmentation of Occitan in the Renaissance to an abandonment, appearing gradual when considering Occitania from North to South, of enclisis. - An interest in psychoanalysis : in the structure and morphology of imperatives, in the fact that an unmarked verbal form is necessarily related to an address and that its descriptive value depends on that relation, I see evidence that language functions in an indicial as well as in a symbolic way (and I give a particular meaning to Chomsky's Extended Projection Principle). - An interest in intonation facts : in the possibility of asserting the juxtaposition they got up, it was six conjointly, of giving it the meaning " when they got up, it was six " or on the contrary " they got up, since it was six " by focusing the second and the first clause - respectively, I recognize a discursive - temporal - dimension to sentences. According to the first eventuality, its real context - its point of insertion within a particular chain of events - is being represented in the asserted clause (cf., for a relation of strict contiguity rather than superposition in the narrative sequence, they got up, no one reacted). In the second case, the adjunct clause, as a subsequent term, cannot coincide with the immediate context : its link with the main clause is presupposed in an absolute way, is representative of causality. A thorough analysis of the prosodic structuring of sentences - an analysis totally independent of punctuation - bears testimony as well to their inscription in time. The constraints known by the dislocation of temporal complements show that these latter are related to global sequences rather than to constituents. Dislocation also leads to the parallel definition of two ways of identifying ordinary references : one, corresponding to the logic of sets, bound to government (and varying minimally across tongues, according to enclisis in particular), the other, binary, oppositional, characterizing partitives, or even personal pronouns and vocatives. All these views offering a frame, eventually, for a description of relative clauses
La réalisation syntaxique des dépendances lexicales en coréen stratégie configurationnelle vs stratégie non-configurationnelle by Joon-Soo Tchoue ( Book )
1 edition published in 1997 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
1 edition published in 1992 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
THE ANALYSIS OF THE NEGATION, ADVERBS AND FLOATING QUANTIFIERS SHOWED THAT BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE MAKES USE OF THE PROCESS NAMED VERBAL RAISING IN ORDER TO FORM A INFLECTED VERB. THE HYPOTHESIS THAT NEGATION DENIES THE VERBAL PHRASE CAN JUSTIFY THE EXISTENCE OF THE PHENOMENON NAMED NEGATIVE POLARITY IN THIS LANGUAGE. THE TRACE IN SUBJECT POSITION IS HEAD-GOVERNED BY I WHEN THE VERB IS MOVED AND THE CONDITION NAMED SUPER-RELATIVIZED MINIMALITY CAN CREATE A BARRIER FOR EXTRACTION. THE HYPOTHESIS THAT ADJUNCTION TO IP IS POSSIBLE IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE EXPLAINS WELL FORMED WH VIOLATIONS. FANALLY, A EMPTY OBJECT CAN BE LICENTIATE BY PRONOMINAL FEATURES ASSOCIATED TO THE HEAD D OF HIS ANTECEDENT
La syntaxe de la périphérie gauche en portugais européen et son acquisition by Carla Soares ( Book )
1 edition published in 2006 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This dissertation investigates the syntax and the acquisition of the left periphery by Portuguese children (from 1;2.0 to 4;6.18). A model of the left periphery is proposed, which relies on the system of feature checking within the minimalist framework and on the proxy category theory of phrase structure by Nash and Rouveret (1997, 2002). The C category splits in the course of the derivation in function of its formal features, in order to create the necessary syntactic space enabling the verification of these features. In the model proposed, the periphery is flexible since its syntaxic form may vary depending on constructions and languages. The Derivational Complexity Hypothesis is used to account for the development pattern of the left periphery, which is observable in the linguistic production data of the children under study. This hypothesis predicts that the less complex constructions emerge earlier; the derivational complexity notion being assessed by a specific and adequate complexity measure, which is defined
