The human factor : the figure in contemporary sculpture by Hayward Gallery( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'The Human Factor: the Figure in Contemporary Sculpture' brings together the work of 25 leading international artists, in whose practice the human form plays a central role. Over the past 25 years, artists have reinvented figurative sculpture by looking back to earlier movements in art history as well as imagery from contemporary culture. Setting up dialogues with modernist as well as classical and archaic models of art, these artists engage and confront the question of how we represent the 'human' today. Eschewing concerns related to psychological portraiture, these artists use the figure as a catalyst for evoking far-ranging content, including subjects spanning political violence and mortality to sexuality and voyeurism. A unique survey of figurative sculpture today, this highly illustrated volume features newly-commissioned essays by authors including Tate Britain Director, Penelope Curtis, art critic and writer Martin Herbert, Artangel co-director James Lingwood, art historian Lisa Lee and Hayward Gallery Director, and curator of the exhibition, Ralph Rugoff. Alongside full-colour images of the artists' works, the book also includes original and rarely-seen material documenting the creation of these fascinating works."--

Tiré du site Internet de Hatje Cantz: "In this unusually designed artist's book, Paul McCarthy presents his archive of materials that have influenced him. "Low Life Slow Life" presents a diverse range of artists and artworks related to Paul McCarthy's memories of his own career. Curated by Paul McCarthy (*1945 in Salt Lake City), the two-part exhibition investigates his life as an artist - from his student years in Salt Lake City and San Francisco during the sixties to his years in Los Angeles from 1970 to the present - with an emphasis on the emergence of alternative performance practices, Conceptual art, and video art. His curatorial selections are eclectic and unconventional, deriving more from his personal recollections than from any historical, objective measure of artistic influence. Packaged as a recreation of a vintage of Tide detergent, this publication has been conceived to serve as an extension of the show. An artwork in itself, the book showcases a vast range of works that have influenced McCarthy's career, presenting a personal map of his individual art history and philosophy."

A collaborative work based on Johanna Spyri's novel, Heidi. Presented at the Krinzinger Galerie in Vienna, during a show of Los Angeles based artists, entitled LAX. Consists of a set, a group of partial and full life-size rubber figures and a video tape shot entirely on the set. The artists were interested in addressing the fractured nature of filmic language, the fact that films are experienced as a seamless whole. The life-size rubber figures were used as "sculptural stand-ins" for the actors, more in the manner of a puppet show than traditional film
