Colonel Robert Patterson (1753-1827) was born in the neighborhood of Cove Mountains, Pennsylvania. He migrated to Kentucky in 1775, where he was one of the founders of Lexington, Kentucky. He married married Elizabeth Lindsay of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1780, and returned to Kentucky. They had at least eight children, 1786- 1801. The family migrated into the Miami Valley and settled near Dayton, Ohio. A veteron of the Revoltionary War, Col. Patterson continued his military carreer on the frontier and was a farmer and operated a lumber mill. His son, Jefferson Patterson (1801-1863) married to Julia Johnston (1811-1897). Two of their children, John H. Patterson (1844-1922) and Frank J. Patterson (1849-1901) co-founded the National Cash Register Company in Dayton in 1884. While serving as president of N.C.R., John H. Paterson revolutionized marketing and employee relation practices and promoted civic improvement and growth
