Competitive algorithms for replication and migration problems by David L Black ( Book )
2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
Abstract: "In this paper we consider problems that arise in a shared memory multiprocessor in which memory is physically distributed among a number of memories local to each processor or cluster of processors. The issue we address is that of deciding which local memories should contain copies of pages of data. In the migration problem we operate under the constraint that a page must be kept in exactly one local memory. In the replication problem we allow a page to be kept in any subset of the local memories, but do not allow a local memory to drop a page once it has it.

Scheduling support for concurrency and parallelism in the Mach operating system by David L Black ( Book )
2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
Abstract: "Changes in the use of multiprocessors are placing new demands on operating system schedulers. This article describes some of the new challenges posed by parallel and concurrent applications, and introduces techniques developed by the Mach project to meet these challenges. An overview of the techniques of timesharing scheduling and a description of the Mach scheduler are also included. This article describes work to incorporate processor allocation and control into the Mach operating system. The design approach divides the implementation into three components: (1) basic mechanisms implemented in the kernel, (2) long term policy implemented in a server, and (3) optional user implementation of short term policy.
Scheduling and resource management techniques for multiprocessors by David L Black ( Book )
1 edition published in 1990 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
Abstract: "This thesis describes research in the design and implementation of multiprocessor resource management and related areas. Application requirements motivated the major research areas, processor scheduling and non-uniform memory management, as these areas contain the most important problems raised by the changing design and use of multiprocessors. A variety of processor scheduling problems are addressed by this work. A major contribution is the design and implementation of a processor allocation and control facility for the Mach operating system that allows processors to be dedicated to applications. The implementation of this facility has been validated by production use, and it is one of the first successful applications of policy-mechanism separation to multiprocessor scheduling (and, in particular, to the problem of dividing a multiprocessor among competing applications).
Implementing a Mach debugger for multithreaded applications by Deborah L Caswell ( Book )
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 7 libraries worldwide
Abstract: "Multiple threads of control add new challenges to the task of application debugging, and require the development of new debuggers to meet these challenges. This paper describes the design and implementation of modifications to an existing debugger (gdb) for debugging multithreaded applications under the Mach operating system. It also describes the operating system facilities that support it. Although certain implementation details are specific to Mach, the underlying design principles are applicable to other systems that support threads in a Unix compatible environment."

Competitive Management of Distributed Shared Memory ( Book )
1 edition published in 1988 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
This paper presents and analyzes algorithms for managing the distributed shared memory present in non-uniform memory access multiprocessors and related systems. The competitive properties of these algorithms guarantee that their performance is within a small constant factor of optimal even though they make no use of any information about memory reference patterns. Both hardware and software implementation concerns are covered. A case study of the Mach operating systems indicates that integration of these algorithms into operating systems does not pose major problems. On the other hand, hardware support is required to obtain the full functionality of the algorithms. We also sketch possible algorithm extensions to additional hardware architectures and software programming models. Reprints. (jes).
