Courting, Marriage and Death in Colombia: An Interview by Constance Richardson( Book )

1 edition published in 1976 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

There are a variety of methods to impart the cultural setting of a foreign language. The teacher can use, among other things, cultural assimilators, films, mini-dramas, culture capsules, background lectures, and native-speaking class visitors. This last technique can be extremely effective but difficult to arrange and difficult to control once it has been arranged. This interview, of which the present document is a transcription, was conducted in the hope of providing a native report on certain rituals and their cultural interpretation in Latin America. As such it may be useful to Spanish language teachers, especially those who cannot provide their classes with a native informant. Certainly the interview does not represent a comprehensive review of the various cultural interpretations given these topics in Latin America. Rather, it is a very individual assessment from a single national point of view. The interview was conducted with a Columbian male, born in 1944 in Bogota. The three topics of courting, marriage and death were discussed with him to ascertain the common circumstances and patterns that constitute the Colombian cultural attitude toward certain major phases in an individual's life. The informant has lived in the U.S. since 1965, except for a two-year return to Colombia in 1970-71. (Author/CLK)

In 1939, the Lockeport Fishermen's Union was formed to get fair wages and decent working conditions for fishermen and fish-plant workers who were being forced to survive on an average yearly wage of 250 dollars. The companies shut down the two plants and locked out 270 fish handlers and 347 shore fishermen. When company goons, the police, and even the War Measures Act were used against it, the union was crushed, and not revived again until 1952 when it was officially recognized
