Parallel Logic Programming and ZMOB and Parallel Systems Software and Hardware ( Book )
3 editions published between 1985 and 1988 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This final report presents a summary of research accomplished to investigate parallel problem solving. Under the current grant a parallel problem solving system, PRISM (Parallel Inference System), that was implemented on the VAX/11-780, the PYRAMID and SUN machines, was ported successfully to McMOB and then to the BBN Butterfly parallel architecture. The McMOB architecture is essentially the ZMOB architecture with 16 Motorola 68000 processors, upgrading the Z80A microprocessors, interconnected in a ring structure. Experimental testing of PRISM on McMOB was undertaken in the current year. In addition, several enhancements were made to PRISM to permit experimental analyses to be made, and to incorporate additional features to take full advantage of parallelism in a problem solving environment. The tracing and statistical gathering packages were extended. An ability to display AND-parallelism was added to the trace program which displays the execution of a program on the parallel machines. In addition to the above, work continued in the area of informative answers to be presented to a user. Heuristic techniques were developed to determine which information to display. Keywords: Splicing compilers, Debugging software, Artificial intelligence. (KR)
Designing research space by Mark Weiser ( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "A new method of constructing productive, pleasant interior spaces is based on Berkeley Architecture Professor Chris Alexander's 'Pattern Languages'. Throughout PARC, there are places that work well, and others that do not. Both can be understood in terms of the pattern language. PARC can be gradually remodeled to use the pattern language during the next few years, at little or no additional cost. The benefit for comfort, livability, and productivity could be high. This document proposes that this idea be tested with some small, inexpensive, experiments during the current remodeling of CSL, using the patterns: 'Outdoor Room', 'Alcoves', 'Common Areas at the heart', and 'Ceiling Height Variation', and with the active participation of all lab members in thinking about our space."

Libraries are more than information : situational aspects of electronic libraries by Victoria Ann Reich ( Book )
1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "In discussions of the coming electronic library, a library is often assumed to be just a repository of information. But libraries are more than this, and there is a danger that in the rush to network information we will lose the significant non-informational (what we call 'situational') features of libraries. This paper is speculation by a technologist and a librarian on these features of today's libraries, and how they might take shape in the electronic future. We have identified three library functions that deliver no information, but meet essential human needs, and so should not be overlooked in the design of the national information infrastructure. The three are: providing a reference for community identity; serving as centers of community culture; and entering into the minutia of peoples [sic] lives. Based on these three, we describe some possible principles and policies for electronic information that will help expand the situational functions of libraries to their networked form. Among our suggestions are to: (1) fund the creation of distinctive and diverse community information nodes (physical terminals), (2) encourage wide-spread, free, public information displays, (3) encourage community members to create customized local networked information, (4) use physical proximity as a way to control access, so some local information is easily available only to locals, (5) experiment with loaning pagers, radiomail systems, and other future information sources."
