The Balanda and the bark canoes : the making of Ten canoes( Visual )

Documents the making of Rolf de Heer's eleventh feature film, Ten canoes, which won the Special Grand Jury prize, 2006 Cannes International Film Festival. Both the movie and the documentary were made by award-winning director, Rolf de Heer. Ten canoes tells the story of the people of the Arafura swamp, in their language, and is set a long time before the coming of the Balanda, as white people were known. Dayindi covets one of the wives of his older brother. To teach him the proper way, he is told a story from the mythical past, a story of wrong love, kidnapping, sorcery, bungling mayhem and revenge gone wrong. Rolf de Heer narrates the documentary, talking through the process and challenges of making Ten canoes. The rewarding outcome in the making of Ten canoes is that the film crew and directors returned with a deeper understanding not only of this culture, but of all cultures, including their own. The set builders and canoe builders in the area have brought back from a faraway place some of their culture. They can now walk a little taller than the 'balanda' and with more self-confidence. Above all, this documentary gives a refreshing insight into an aspect of Australian indigenous culture rarely shown

Dance me to my song by Rolf De Heer( Visual )

9 editions published between 1998 and 2008 in English and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

De Heer's seventh feature addresses issues of obligation, accountability, need and love, through the conflict between a severely disabled young woman, Julia, and her abusive, short-tempered and lonely carer, Madelaine. Like Heather Rose, the cerebral palsied actor who plays her, Julia is confined to a wheelchair and is able to communicate only through a voice-synthesizer. Nevertheless, much to Madelaine's chagrin, Julia succeeds in developing a close friendship with Eddie, a man she meets on the street. But Julia wants love and sex, not just companionship, and the two women become locked in a battle for Eddie's attentions. Rose's participation in the film as its lead and as co-writer, and the unflinching focus on the minutiae of her laborious and painful daily routine, brings it into the realm of documentary. As in his earlier films 'Bad Boy Bubby' and 'The Quiet Room', de Heer again focuses on a central character who succeeds in battling against totally inconceivable odds to overcome their victimhood
